Djinama Yilaga Choir

Djinama Yilaga — Create. Rejoice.

We’re an intergenerational choir from the Far South Coast of NSW, with singers aged 11 to 65, united by a passion for song, culture, and connection to Country. Together, we’ve created something truly special — sharing stories and language of the Yuin people through original music in Dhurga.

From performances at Vivid Sydney, Parliament House Canberra, and international festivals, to commissions for the Art Gallery NSW and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, our journey is one of celebration, resilience, and community.

Our partnership with the Sydney Conservatorium of Music is helping introduce our younger members to the possibility of studying music there — inspiring the next generation to carry this cultural legacy forward.

Follow us for beautiful music, cultural stories, and joyful moments as we bring Yuin language and Dreamtime stories to life through song.

We are an intergenerational Yuin choir revitalising and renewing the Dhurga language of the South Coast region of New South Wales (NSW).

At the heart of our choir is a driving passion to reclaim language. Only a generation ago speaking Dhurga language was a punishable offence. Under government policies, teaching the Dhurga language to our children could result in them being taken away from our families.

Formed in 2018, and through a celebration of the beautiful Dhurga language, many doors have opened for the choir. Our songs have been featured in the award winning films Bagan, Barra Barra Mirriwar - Land Sea Sky and we have been invited to perform at Parliament House, Canberra, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney, tour in Poland as part of the Ngarigo Polish exchange and in Washington DC.

Before colonisation of our land, Yuin people were multilingual. Dhurga was the mother tongue of the Walbunga people of the Broulee region and the Brindja Yuin people of Moruya. It was spoken and understood by many within the 13 tribes of the Yuin Nation.

The arrival of Europeans into the South Coast region of NSW changed everything.

We invite you to walk with us, hear our stories and support us to breathe life into the Dhurga language.
